My world of fragrances

I love fragrances, I dream about fragrances. In my mind I create and smell fragrances. This blog is about my world.
The world of fragrances.
In 1999 I tried to create my first perfume. It didn't turned out to be the perfume I had in mind. I started to read about essential oils and all I could find about perfume. I needed to learn a lot about the making of perfume. Everyday I learned more and more. I learned about the reaction of the fragrance materials with one and another. It's amazing how some oils react with each other. I started to learn the essential oils and the characters of them. Now I am still addicted to it. This blog is about my experiences of the making of perfumes.
Right now I'm working on a perfume with white flowers with a ambery note. It has notes of Roses, Jasmine, Tuberose, Honeysuckle, Orangeblossom, Musk, Amber, Vetiver, Sandal, Vanilla etc. I love the fragrance of Tuberose and add a huge amount of Tuberose absolute in it. I like fresh white flower perfumes but this one is gone be more sensual. The result was still to "white" for me and I was searching for something warm. After a lot of experiments I tried to add Coriander and that was the trick it smell warm and sensual but also full of white blooms. I'm still working on it because it need to be more balanced. A lot of perfumes with a Tuberose note contain Selleryseed so I will try that also.

Good luck Jenny with the perfumes and the blog.

I'm assuming you are a natural perfumer? If I'm right you may be interested in having a read of Ylva's 'perfume' blog at Rubys Jewels.

Hi Heather,
Thank you so much. I can't call myself a natural perfumer because beside the naturals I use also synthetics. I love the natural oils and use them a lot but feel the need to boost or modifie them with synthetics.

Hi. The corriander essential oil Is nice green scent. However the scent disappears v fast, even though I had a strong vetiver base note to anchor it.For how long does your Corr. scent linger? Do you have any suggestions for making The Corr. scent retain its presence in a blend longer?

Hi Prabha,
Do you use the Coriander leaf or seed? I am not shure how to make it stay longer in a blend. But I think Coriander is present somewhere between the top and the heart. You have to find an oil that have similar characters like Coriander that is present in the heart, but I'm not shure wich one you can use, maybe Rose or Geranium because of the containing Geraniol that's also present in Coriander. To give the Rose or Geranium staying power you can use Gujackwood. I think the leaf will stay longer so maybe that's an idea to put in your blend, maybe some oils that also present between the top and heart will help like Nutmeg, Petitgrain, Neroli, Black pepper or Ginger etc. It's important to fix the top to the heart and the heartnotes to the basenotes. To me the Coriander is not realy green I found it darker, warmer a bit spicy.

My friend lives in Boskoop. Do you know it? You will have to tell me some nice fragrances that can only be found there. I am in sunny Southern California, USA.

I have only one problem - I dont like TUBEROSE!!! :O) Sorry! But love any other florals and especially Amber.

Hi Victoria,
I know Boskoop because I staid there in a hotel for my work. But I live in Friesland that's about one and a half our drive from there. I don't know a special perfume from Holland that is not for sale outside Holland (like the perfume from People of the Labyrinth). But in Rotterdam is a boutique of Annick Goutal where you can have a look.
And Tuberose yes there are more people that don't like it, but I love it. In fact I will make a post about Tuberose soon. And Amber is just heavenly I think!
